Environment and Resilience
Sound management and protection of Environment and Natural resources have a ripple effect on the sustainability of not only the present generations but also future generations in that, it strengthens livelihoods, reduces the intensity and frequency of resource-based conflicts, increases adaptation and resilience of communities promote stability in the face of climate variability and change.
Climate change and variability is a global phenomenon that is affecting millions of people around the globe especially the vulnerable section of the community who have lower coping capacities. Extreme weather events such as prolonged drought and flooding and threats associated with it have had a devastating impact on the livelihoods of the pastoral communities that heavily rely on livestock and small-scale farming as a major source of livelihood.
RINSO aims to mainstream the environment in all activities it undertakes to ensure environmental protection and conservation and strengthen the adaptation and resilience of communities to the impacts of climate change. We plan to achieve this through the following;
Natural Resource Management:
- Support the formation and strengthening of community structures as envisaged in the Marsabit County Climate Fund Act of 2020 and similar existing legislation in our areas of operation to influence climate change fund flow to the wards thereby strengthening the adaptation and resilience of communities to climate change.
- Empowerment and capacity building of local communities to engage in alternative sources of livelihood apart from livestock keeping to reduce climate change shocks and strengthen their resilience
- Collaborate with local stakeholders and environmental experts to develop
community-based natural resource management plans tailored to the ecological needs of Marsabit.
- Implement reforestation projects using indigenous tree species and agroforestry techniques to restore degraded landscapes and enhance ecosystem resilience.
- Facilitate participatory land use planning processes to promote sustainable land management practices and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
- Carry out awareness campaigns and education on environmental protection and conservation frequently through public baraza/gatherings, workshops, and through media such as local and national Radio and television
Community Land Advocacy and Registration:
- Provide legal support and advocacy services to nomadic communities seeking formal recognition of their land rights and traditional territories.
- Assist communities in navigating the land registration process, including documentation and negotiation with relevant authorities.
- Strengthen community-based land governance structures to ensure equitable access to resources and sustainable land use practices.
Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction:
- Conduct vulnerability assessments to identify climate-related risks and develop adaptation strategies in collaboration with communities.
- Integrate climate-smart agriculture practices and early warning systems for extreme weather events into community resilience plans.
- Provide training on disaster preparedness and response, including evacuation drills and the establishment of community emergency shelters.
